I have consolidated my relationship with LastPass – finally – becoming (almost) a complete convert. It simplifies password management to the point that life without it, now, would be intolerable.
It is just so easy:
- Install browser plugin
- Create Lastpass account
- Login to one of your websites and click ‘save’ and ‘Autologin’ when LastPass prompts you.
From now on, you don’t need to do anything to login to the website – just visit it and LastPass does the rest!
You can also use LastPass generated passwords – for that extra strength feeling – as you no longer have to remember them they can be really complex.
Fab!
However, there are some restrictions which prove that LastPass isn’t quite a panacea – yet. There is an ‘offline’ program, that allows you to logon when LastPass is offline or unobtainable – which covers one of my main issues, but LastPass can not login to applications – just websites, as far as I am aware.
This does restrict it somewhat – making KeePass still very hard to beat – as it will do both – albeit in a more complicated manner, as a bit of scripting is required.
Where LastPass really blows away all competition, is the simplicity of configuration and seamless integration into the browser environment: I defy anyone who has lots of passwords to manage, not to be impressed!
So, LastPass or KeePass?
Well, for me LastPass has the edge – but only just – what makes KeePass (still) very attractive is its total portability – if it had a more streamlined, seamless integration with the browser it would be the no.1 killer app in this arena.
Well, great products. But I tried also some commercial ones and I have found out, that they are fat more better and also with great support, campaigns, discounts etc. Personally I use password manager called Sticky Password and I am very satisfied with it.

I’m not sure I could agree – after all, why would I pay for password management, when I can get fantastic functionality from LastPass for free?
