{"id":78,"date":"2010-03-01T13:17:41","date_gmt":"2010-03-01T13:17:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/timbrison.wordpress.com\/?p=78"},"modified":"2014-02-01T10:10:19","modified_gmt":"2014-02-01T10:10:19","slug":"gfi-backup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uktech.co.uk\/blog\/2010\/03\/gfi-backup\/","title":{"rendered":"GFI Backup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am currently trailing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gfi.com\/backup-hm\" target=\"_blank\">GFI BAckup<\/a> &#8211; which is free &#8211; against the all-conquering <a href=\"http:\/\/www.genie-soft.com\/products\/gbm\/gb\/default.html\" target=\"_blank\">Genie Backup Manager<\/a> (commercial), which has to be almost the defacto standard in home backup: I have yet to find a more complete system than GBM. However, my findings so far regarding the GFI offering:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>GFI Backup is outstanding!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/uktech.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/screenshot-134.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-79 aligncenter pic\" alt=\"GFI Backup main page\" src=\"http:\/\/uktech.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/screenshot-134-300x211.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uktech.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/screenshot-134-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uktech.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/screenshot-134-424x300.jpg 424w, https:\/\/www.uktech.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/screenshot-134.jpg 752w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a synch to set up and use &#8211; everything designed in a logical and almost foolproof manner: this is what you have to do to back something up:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click the word &#8216;Backup&#8217; (see screen above)<\/li>\n<li>Select your source files&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Select your destination&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Specify any options, like encryption and when you it to run&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Click Finish!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<blockquote><p>Could it be easier than this?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Well actually it could, because GFI Backup will actually search your machine for known file types and back these up, without you having to specify <em><strong>where <\/strong><\/em>your files are actually stored. This feature is also available in other backup software, but remember GFI is <em><strong>free<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, this &#8216;autodiscover&#8217; feature has never attracted me &#8211; if only for the reason that I like to know that nothing has been &#8216;missed&#8217; from my backup. Still, it&#8217;s a very useful feature and nice to know it is available.<\/p>\n<p>Another attraction is the ability to <em><strong>synchronise <\/strong><\/em>folders &#8211; something that is often missing from alternative solutions.
