As a programmer, in a previous life, hammering away at the keyboard for 16 hours a day &#8211; and drinking endless cups of coffee was\u00a0<em><strong>usual<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It was considered computer geek &#8216;normality&#8217;.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">But no more \u2013 as this\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/apps.washingtonpost.com\/g\/page\/national\/the-health-hazards-of-sitting\/750\/\">infographic<\/a>\u00a0shows \u2013 it really is\u00a0<em style=\"font-weight: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: inherit;\">that<\/span><\/em>\u00a0bad, so I decided to do something about it.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"font-weight: inherit; color: #444444;\">What to Do?<\/h4>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">It\u2019s actually very easy to alleviate the problems of prolonged sitting \u2013 don\u2019t do it! Use these steps to help keep moving and reap the benefits of becoming more active at work:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #444444;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Ensure <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ergonomics-info.com\/ergonomic-computer-desk.html\">good posture<\/a> and ergonomics while you are sitting.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Walk somewhere periodically. (Any moderate exercise for about 30 mins a day is good).<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Move the phone into a different room.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Consider using a standing desk.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Use the toilet on a different floor to the one where you work.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Always use the stairs &#8211; never use the lift or escalators \u2013 if possible.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Don\u2019t keep bottled water at your desk \u2013 when your cup is empty you have to get up for a refill.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">If you sit near a water dispenser, use one from a different department, so you have to walk further. (You can also use the opportunity to catch up with colleagues).<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Use an App like\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/davidevitelaru.com\/software\/breaker\/\">Breaker<\/a>\u00a0to remind you to break up your day.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Don\u2019t use the phone to chat to a colleague \u2013 walk over to their desk instead.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Drink more water. If you are properly hydrated, you will work more efficiently, get more done and a get an additional visit to the loo! (Hence walk more!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">These aren\u2019t the only things you can do \u2013 but they are a starting point. From there, the options are endless &#8211; you could\u00a0even ditch the &#8216;sitting lunch&#8217; for a cycling one instead!<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: #444444;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">I started using a lot of these methods &#8211; and haven\u2019t looked back.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">You feel more alert, your concentration increases and you blast through difficult tasks easily.
